Overview of Short Courses:

This service is provided for both Shetland Islands Council and external customers requiring training. Some of the courses are mandatory, eg First Aid. The service aims to provide training that will benefit the local economy with better trained, more professional staff. Train Shetland ensures that training/learning provided is in line with the needs of employers.
Train Shetland (Short Courses) is responsive to all requests and endeavours to meet all demands placed on it.

Train Shetland (Short Courses) aims to meet the needs of both internal (SIC) and external customers in relation to short course delivery. External customers can be either small businesses or individuals. The directory of training includes all areas of First Aid and offers a recall system for certificated courses. It works in partnership with CITB and organises industry specific training on their behalf. Corporate courses based on the SIC policies and procedures are organised specifically for the SIC but can be adapted for external customers. I. T training is also tailored to corporate needs but is also offered externally. PATS training is organised for community needs and Train Shetland (Short Courses) administers the recall for updating certificates. Food Hygiene courses are organised for both the public, the Trusts and the School Meals Service; courses on offer are Elementary, Intermediate and Refresher. A range of Health and Safety courses are offered starting with the one day Elementary leading to the 5 day Managing Safely.

Train Shetland (Short Courses) is a Registered Training Provider with ILA Scotland. ILA Scotland offers anyone living in Scotland aged 18 and over up to £200 a year to help pay for courses. The money is not a loan so it doesn't need to be paid back. The learner just needs to contribute at least £10 for each course they take using their ILA Scotland account. All the learner has to do to access funds is call free on 0808 100 1090 to request an ILA Scotland Application pack. Not all Train Shetland courses are applicable - courses must have "Approved Learning Status". This will be advised upon enquiry or application for an individual course.

"Shetland will benefit from everyone having the same chances to make their fullest contribution in every field." As part of the Shetland Islands Council, Train Shetland (Short Courses) will do this by ensuring there is no discrimination in any of our services and by promoting equal opportunities at all times.
