In this section you will find out all you need to know about the programme you are interested in. However, you can only be enrolled on a programme if you are employed on the start date. Click on the links below to get the most up to date information on the programme you want. If you want a detailed list of the Units and Elements you will study you can visit the SQA Website.

This section lists our current programmes first, followed by programmes that could be offered if an employer vacancy becomes available.

Accountancy - Level 2 & Level 3
 

Typical work duties in this field include: dealing with invoices, VAT Returns, payroll, recording capital transactions, word processing, photocopying, answering phones and other general office duties. You will gain experience of dealing with other people, both the public and work colleagues.

Amenity Horticulture (Gardening) - Level 2 & Level 3
 

Typical duties at work will be establishing and maintaining plant growth, nursery work, maintenance of decorative grass areas and paths and maintenance of machinery.

Aquaculture - Level 2 & Level 3
 

Your workplace will be a Salmon Farm. Typical duties include: feeding fish, grading fish, killing fish, boat handling, moving cages, checking levels of oxygen in cages & cleaning nets.

Architect Technician - HNC
 

Typical work duties would include working on drawings and plans – mostly computer aided design. Measuring sizes and collating information,. Surveying. Meeting with contractors. Work on specifications for plans eg drainage, electrical. Work on planning applications. Administrations tasks such as entering information on spreadsheets and databases. Work is mainly office based with surveying work on site.

Beauty Therapy - Level 2 & Level 3
 

Typical duties will include general cleaning, reception, manicure, pedicure, facials, hair removal, etc. You will gain experience of dealing with the public and with colleagues.

Business & Administration - Level 2 & Level 3
 

Typical work duties will include: word processing, computer applications, photocopying, answering phones and other general office duties. You will gain experience of dealing with the public and work colleagues.

Carpentry and Joinery - Level 3
 

Typical duties would include: making windows and doors, fitting skirtings and facings, assembling wooden structures for houses, roofing and other general building work.

Children's Care, Learning & Development - Level 2 & Level 3
 

You will be employed in a local nursery. Typical duties will include craft activities, reading stories, playing games, making snack etc. You will be part of a team which is responsible for the children’s care, learning and development.

Civil Engineering Technician
 

Typical work duties involve land surveying, computer aided drawing and planning of structures such as bridges, roads, drains and piers. Work is mostly office based with some site visits.

Construction Plant Maintenance - Level 2 & Level 3
 

Typical work duties in this field include the repair and maintenance of construction plant equipment. This includes engine repair and overhaul, engine systems, engine fault diagnosis and repair, work on steering and plant braking systems. Replacement, repair and fault diagnosis of plant electrics, hydraulics, transmission, track vehicle transmission and air brakes. Working in workshop, machining and welding.

Engineering Fabrication & Welding - Level 2 & Level 3
 

Employment will be with local engineering companies within the field of manufacture. Duties will include the measuring, marking out, cutting (mechanical and gas), shaping, assembly, welding of a variety of engineering materials (aluminium, steel, stainless steel, etc).

Engineering Maintenance - Level 2 & Level 3
 

Employment could be with a variety of local companies including engineering companies, fish factories, fish farms, quarries etc. Any organisation which owns and maintains any kind of machinery or works on machinery for customers. Duties will include the servicing, maintenance and repair of equipment and could include electrical maintenance.

Fishing (Deckhand) - Level 2
 

This programme is designed for persons who are working on board fishing vessels. It normally takes one year to complete. Typical duties include: gutting fish, washing down deck and hold, mending nets, taking watch, landing fish, galley duties and assisting when shooting the net and hauling, icing boxes and duties in the hold. This programme will only run subject to demand.

Hairdressing - Level 2 & Level 3
 

Typical duties include: general cleaning, shampooing, blow drying and taking bookings. With experience, students move onto cutting and styling of hair, tinting/highlighting, etc. You will also gain experience of dealing with the public and work colleagues.

Health & Social Care- Level 2
 

Work will be involved in practical caring for those in residential care centres e.g.. bathing, washing, helping with meals. You will also take part in social activities e.g. outings, quizzes, bingo. Some domestic and kitchen duties may be necessary.

Heating and Ventilation (Installation) - Level 2 & Level 3
 

Duties would typically include installation of boilers, pumps and water cylinders, work with high pressure water systems, Work with drainage systems, installing hot and cold water services, work with copper, stainless steel and plastic piping, some plumbing work eg installation of sinks and toilets, work with air ventilation units and ducting.

Heavy Vehicle Mechanics - Level 3
 

Employment will be with a local haulier, bus garage or heavy vehicle maintenance workshop. Typical duties include: servicing, maintenance and repair of heavy good vehicles (over 7 tonnes) or buses.

IT Technician - Level 2
 

Duties will include: assisting in the setting up and installing of networked, stand-alone and portable computer and communications equipment, testing and upgrading equipment, analysing faults, advising users, maintaining spreadsheet and database records.

Jewellery Manufacture - Level 2 & Level 3
 

Duties include jewellery design, manufacturing and finishing operations using a variety of materials including gold and silver. This programme is aimed at someone who wishes to pursue a career in jewellery manufacture.

Light Vehicle Mechanics - Level 3
 

Employment will be with a local motor vehicle garage working on light vehicles (up to 7 tonnes – but normally passenger cars and light vans). Typical duties will include the servicing, maintenance and repair of this type of vehicle.

Motor Vehicle Body Repair or Body Refinishing
 

You will be working in a motor vehicle body repair environment undertaking one of two disciplines; Body Repair or Body Refinishing (Panel Beating or Spraying). Typical Duties include: paint preparation, re-alignment of body shells/chassis, sanding, paint mixing and spraying. Dismantling and reassembling of vehicle parts, housekeeping, care of tools and equipment, etc.

Plumbing - Level 3
 

Main duties will include, hot and cold water pipework, repair and installation of pipes, sewage work, drains and central heating. Lead work. Installation & maintenance of boilers & pumps. Removal & installation of sinks, baths, showers & toilets.

Professional Cookery - Level 2 & Level 3
 

This programme is aimed at someone who is pursuing a career working in a commericial catering environment. Areas covered will be Health and Safety, hygiene, basic preparation, cooking and presentation of dishes such as soups, starters, poultry, meat dishes, fish and shelfish, pastries, vegetable dishes and sweets. Depending on the workplace table service, buffet payments, customer care and ordering stock.

Refrigeration Engineering - Level 2 & Level 3
 

The programme is designed for persons who are engaged in the installation and servicing of refrigeration and air-conditioning plant
Duties include servicing, repair and installation of refrigeration and air conditioning plant. including equipment rated above 25kW. Typically work would be in fish factories.

Science Laboratory Technician
 

This will be based at the Anderson High School Science Laboratory. Typical duties will include: controlling stocks of laboratory materials and equipment, repairing resources, setting up and dismantling experiments, assisting staff and pupils. This placement is for 2 years of training only and typically, trainees will then go on to college or university to study science related topics.

Warehousing and Stores - Level 2
 

This programme is designed for a trainee storesperson and duties would include ordering and recieving stock, dealing with customer queries, displaying stock, dealing with invoices and computer stock applications.

Agricultural Engineering - Level 2 & Level 3
 

Typical work duties in this field include engine repair and overhaul, working on steering and braking systems, tractor transmissions, tractor hydraulics. Repair and overhaul of farm machinery. Diagnostics, Working in the workshop and welding.

Amenity Horticulture - Sports Turf
 

Typical duties will include the repair and maintenance of a golf course, removing unwanted plant growth, reseeding, use of pesticides, grass cutting, drainage, painting benches and fences and maintenance of all associated machinery.
This work could also be carried out on sports pitches.

Barbering Level 2 & Level 3
 

Typical duties include: general cleaning, shampooing, blow drying and taking bookings. With experience, students move onto cutting and styling of hair, colouring etc. You will also gain experience of dealing with the public and work colleagues.

Bricklaying
 

Typical duties would include: constructing all types of walling from plain walls to more detailed work, Constructing new builds and extensions. Renovating old buildings. Picking and pointing. Plastering and harling walls. Building blocks.

Electrical / Electronics Servicing - Level 2 & Level 3
 

Duties include maintenance and servicing of television sets and domestic appliances, electronic equipment such as computers, videos, photocopiers etc.

Engineering – Electrical Level 2 and Level 3
 

Electrical engineering duties include repair and servicing of generators, alternators, 3 phase electrical supplies, high and low voltage electrical generation and distribution, all aspects of plant electrical systems
Note – this is not a qualification for a domestic or industrial electrician. That is provided by Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust.

Floristry
 

Typical duties would include making up flower arrangements from cut and dries flowers. Using fresh or artificial flowers to make up bouquets, button holes, posies and wreathes. Dealing with customer requests and taking deliveries of stock. Decorating shop premises.

Furniture Making
 

Designing individual pieces of furniture for customers. Cutting wood to shape using power tools and hand tools. Sanding, varnishing and applying wood finishes. Some upholstery work. Computer aided drawing and working from plans. Making house signs, candleholders, and other items requiring woodturning.

Heating and Ventilation (Servicing and Maintenance) - Level 2 & Level 3
 

Typical work duties would include servicing and carrying out routine and non routine maintenance on installed systems. Systems include Hot and Cold water services, Heating systems, Air Conditioning systems, Ventilation systems & LPG installations.

Horse Care
 

Duties would include mucking out stables, exercising horses, cleaning tack, feeding and watering horses. Help inexperienced horse riders by giving lessons or assisting the instructor. Trainees would be expected to sit the Royal Horse Society exams.

Payroll
 

Typical duties would include working out gross and net pay, making appropriate deductions, recording information, keeping records, notifying details to others within the workplace and government departments. Recording End of Year information and notifying various establishments. Sending information to staff and other departments. Working with various computer programmes. General office duties such as photocopying. Dealing with queries from staff and others.

Pharmacy Services - Level 3
 

Pharmacy Technicians are experts on medicines and drugs and are employed within shop or hospital settings. Typical duties include preparing medicines according to prescriptions, giving advice on use of medicines and drugs, ordering, stock control, security and storage of drugs and medicines.

Powder Coating
 

This work involves applying powder coating finishes to various surfaces in line with safe working practices and approved procedures. Hot spraying a variety of different metals. Wire-brushing, shot blasting and grit blasting to remove rust. Chemical cleaning including degreasing. Housekeeping.

Painting and Decorating
 

Typical duties would include: preparing surfaces, taping and filling, applying paint by brush and roller, applying wall coverings, producing decorative finishes and outdoor painting.

Quantity Surveying
 

Typical duties include: calculating the surface area of floors/walls/ceilings, calculating the materials required to cover these areas (e.g. paint, plasterboard), calculating specifications for contractors, working out the labour needed for building works or maintenance, compiling packs for contractors to tender, collating information for costs, administrative tasks such as databases and spreadsheets.
Work is mainly office based with occasional visits and surveying work on site.

Signmaking
 

Typical duties would include designing artwork for logos, business cards, signs, making mock ups for customers, Making stickers. Fitting signs on shop fronts, vans, trucks, boats and other areas. Designing and making banners.
Working with various computer programmes on graphics and photographs. Dealing with customers and general administration duties.

Veterinary Nursing - Level 2 & Level 3
 

This programme is designed for persons who are employed in a Veterinary Surgery as a Veterinary Nurse. Duties include assisting veterinary surgeons in the diagnosis and treatment of animal diseases and injuries. Veterinary nurses also care for the animal left at the surgery pre and post treatment. Clerical and receptionist duties may also be undertaken. The programme is designed and approved by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.

Youth Work
 

Typically employment would be within Youth Clubs or Youth Centres.
Trainees would assist staff to provide various youth activities such as sports, drama, craftwork and group events. Manning on tuck shop or café facilities. Trainees would work with other staff to provide support to young people and promote equality, self-identity and safeguard their welfare.

Community Involvement Training
 

This course will equip you with the skills to undertake effective community consultation, providing an understanding of why consultation is important and a range of tools and techniques to help you plan, implement and monitor community consultation exercises.
