What is Skillseekers? |

Skillseekers is a proven vocational-based career option available to young people aged 16 to 19 years, who would aim to achieve a Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ), or other equivalent qualification at level 2, which can take on average between 1 to 2 years to complete.
Skillseekers is the first step on the ladder, once learners have gained more experience and responsibility they can progress to a Modern Apprenticeship (however age limits may apply).
These qualifications will enable you to gain valuable practical experience with the ability to put your new skills to work right away – making it a good option for both you and your employer.

Where will I go to College? |

Train Shetland currently deal with around 16 different colleges. Where possible we will send you to local colleges, however, if the course cannot be offered locally we will pay for you to travel to the mainland and attend college on a block release basis varying from 1 week blocks to 12 weeks blocks.
If you do have to go away to college your fares and lodgings will be paid for you by Train Shetland (up to a maximum specified by SDS) and our Vocational Training Co-ordinators can always be reached to offer guidance and advice.

How much will you get paid? |

You will be employed from the start of the training. Payment rates can vary considerably and is dependant on the type of job being trained for. Rates of pay vary between employers. Wage rates may go up as you get older and gain more skills and experience. Employers will also give you paid time off for college blocks.

How Do I Apply? |

Applications can be made at anytime throughout the year by completing an application form. You should also approach employers directly to see if they would be interested in taking you on. Some firms advertise their own Skillseeker vacancies in the Shetland Times.
