What is a Modern Apprenticeship?

Modern Apprenticeships are a qualification-based career option for the technicians and supervisors of the future who are aiming to achieve a Scottish Vocation Qualification (SVQ) at level 3 or above.

Modern Apprenticeships offer a broad spectrum of foundation knowledge and skills together with a high level of technical competence in the area of work which the apprenticeship applies. They will take, on average, between 2 to 4 years to complete.

New For 2010: Due to new funding rules by Skills Development Scotland, all Modern Apprenticeship programmes are only available to those over the age of 16 and under the age of 20 years.

Will I have to go away to College?

Train Shetland currently deal with around 16 different colleges. Where possible we will send you to local colleges, however, if the course cannot be offered locally we will pay for you to travel to the mainland and attend college on a block release basis varying from 1 week blocks to 12 weeks blocks.

If you do have to go away to college your fares and lodgings will be paid for you by Train Shetland and our Vocational Training Co-ordinators can always be reached to offer guidance and advice.

Who pays for the training?

The direct costs of training through the Skillseeker and Modern Apprenticeship programmes are fully funded, in most instances, by Skills Development Scotland. Additional support towards the cost of travel and lodgings may also be available if you have to attend college as part of your training programme.

How much will you get paid?

As a Modern Apprentice you will be paid the going rate for the job. The rate you will receive will depend on your employer.

What are the Benefits?

Vocational qualifications and training are recognised as being essential to business success, therefore making it a good career choice, giving you the skills you need in the workplace. The skills and practical experience gained in the workplace are often tailored to meeting your needs and those of your employer.

Vocational qualifications are designed to bring the maximum benefits to both you and your employer. They are available in a wide range of job skills and career paths. The benefits are:
• A wide choice of career opportunities
• Practical and relevant job training
• The skills and experience to do the job
• A nationally recognised qualification
• Improved career prospects

How does studying work?

Vocational Qualifications are available on a part-time study basis for learners already in employment. The majority of training requirements can be met in the workplace, but are often supported by college study, either on a day or block-release basis. Learners are assessed on a continuous basis, rather than a written examination.

How do I apply?

Applications can be made at anytime throughout the year by completing an application form. You can also approach employers directly to see if they would be interested in taking you on. Some firms advertise their own Modern Apprenticeship vacancies in the Shetland Times.
